Working Out on the Job
How many people these days have desk jobs and sit around all day while they work? And then these hard workers go home and all they want to do is relax! This is becoming the sedentary lifestyle the desk job people of our society and getting stuck into. So I say, why not try and incorporate some exercise into your job? I've actually read about a company that has their workers on treadmills! But, that's going to take a lot more effort than what I propose. Im suggesting little efforts made to help get your body working while your mind makes all the work decisions. Park farther away rather than look for the closest parking spot, take the stairs instead of waiting for the elevator, make that extra trip upstairs to the fax machine or across the office to get more paper. Incorporating simple movements throughout the day is important, whether you make it a point to get up and stretch or always be the one to offer to make the trips around the office, every little bit helps! Young students in schools are having 10 minute exercise sessions in the classroom which is proving to help make their minds work more efficiently and the students are performing better so I say it should work the same in the workplace. Why not put a little effort from the body to help empower the mind? This site will give you some more ideas! How to Workout at Work!

I liked this article and the picture you posted for it fits with my story. I have an X-box at my house which I play from time to time and decided to use an exercise ball to sit on while playing which makes me actively work to maintain my balance where normally I would just be sitting stationary and sedentary. It probably it a huge change but it's a positive one.
ReplyDeleteGreat topic, and I totally agree with you! There was actually a movement science honors class that was offered here last semester that focused its curriculum around the physical inactivity crisis in the U.S. One of the students in the class was an education major and she did a project on introducing exercise in the classroom. She actually went to an elementary school and did a lesson plan called “Moving with Math.” The kids were able to go outside and get active while still learning something. This concept might have to be implemented school wide, especially if physical education classes continue to get cut out of the curriculum. This example just goes to show you that we increase physical activity in our schools and at work.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that people need to cooperation exercise into their work life. I went on a job intervention and spoke with some people who worked at corporate fitness. These people started their own gym at a huge corporation. So when people had breaks from their desk job, they could go to the gym for a brief workout. The thing is, is that it doesn't have to be a long, exhausting workout. Just something to get them off their behinds and get there heart rate elevated will work. My sister works in a cubicle and I had the chance to visit her at work. I know I could never work in a cubicle but she explained how on her breaks she would go out for a jog or some activity to get her body loose and heart rate moving. This was very useful information. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI also agree that many more people have to fit in exercise into their work life. I know a guy at work that works 12 hour shifts on days he works and he still goes to the gym right after work. I agree with you on how people should use the stairs over the elevators. It's great how young kids are getting a break to exercise in classrooms. Any sort of exercise will help, great article.
