Foods the Fight Depression

As odd as it may sound, there are actually some foods that can make you feel better about yourself! Obviously a healthy diet and exercise have led to less cases of depression, but even specific foods have chemicals that can help your body function better and actually make you feel better. Some foods that help are Omega-3 fatty acids, B Vitamins, Amino acids, Carbohydrates, & St. John's Wort. There is not enough research to show that these foods can actually prevent or treat depression, but it's interesting to have doctors actually prescriber certain foods or types of foods to help with the disease. Although it's not proven how these foods perform their magic, reseachers believe that the foods effect the chemical in the brain. Check out this link to read more about these foods!Foods that make you feel good!

  1. Cherish I thought this was interesting information since winter is coming up and people usually feel down when it's cold out. I didn't know omega-3 fattty acids, found in fish, can help lift your spirits. I think a combination of these foods and daily exercise can improve depression so people should apply both in their lives if they want to improve their well being. I've heard some negative news about St. Johns Wart, so that would be something to further research on before using it.

  2. There definitely appears to be a sound connection between dietary deficiencies and depression.
Lots of us are deficient in Vit B complex, Magnesium and Selenium, all implicated. Also, need niacin and Vit C to absorb Tryptophan from protein foods and turn it into Serotonin (The "Happy Hormone") Lack of sunshine reduces our Vit D - hence Seasonal Affective Disorder or "S.A.D."
